How to Remove Common Stains (Before They Set)

2024-05-22

The golden rule of stain removal is: act fast. The sooner you deal with a stain, the better chance you have of removing it completely. Here's our guide to the most common culprits.

Red wine: Blot (don't rub) immediately with a clean cloth. Cover with salt to absorb the liquid, then rinse with cold water. For stubborn stains, bring it to us β€” we have professional pre-treatment solutions.

Coffee: Rinse with cold water immediately. Apply a small amount of washing-up liquid and work gently. Rinse again. Don't use hot water β€” it sets the stain.

Grass: Grass stains contain chlorophyll which bonds with fabric. Pre-treat with a biological detergent and leave for 30 minutes before washing. For sports kit, our specialist treatment is very effective.

Blood: Cold water only β€” hot water sets blood stains permanently. Rinse thoroughly with cold water, then apply hydrogen peroxide (test on a hidden area first).

Grease and oil: Apply cornflour or talcum powder immediately to absorb the oil. Brush off, then apply a small amount of washing-up liquid before laundering.

Ink: Dab with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) on a cotton wool ball, working from the outside of the stain inward. Rinse, then wash normally.

When in doubt β€” call us. We've seen every stain imaginable and we know how to deal with them. Don't risk making things worse with the wrong treatment.
